LOOK BEFORE YOU LOVE
In my vast collection of books I have one called “Look Before You Love”. It is a study of marital compatibility by a psychologist.
As an astrologer, I have always recommended the same. Yet, most of us, myself included, take a look at the chart of a potential mate when we are too involved emotionally to hear an unbiased advice. But for those exceptional cool heads this is what I would have suggested:
Before you look at compatibility between the 2 charts, take a look at the chart of your potential mate to see if he or she wants the same things out of life as you do. Figure out what that person wants out of marriage, and what kind of marriage he or she is looking for.
So, first, take a look at that person’s seventh house:
The planets there describe a partner the person is likely to marry through this person’s eyes.
Contrary to many opinions, the only planet that spells real problem there is Neptune. Neptune in the seventh house shows that the person does not really want a real relationship. If the native ever ties a knot, it would be with someone emotionally unavailable (a drug addict, a long-distance lover, or someone whose heart is elsewhere).
I would also be apprehensive of a person with Jupiter in the seventh house: not only this native likes freedom in relationship (or even being free of a relationship), but he or she is likely to take off at the first sign of trouble. Such people are sure that a better mate waits for them just around the corner. Only a dutiful Saturn next to that Jupiter could temper this attitude to some extend. But then with time this person is likely to begin to see his or her mate as a punishing ball and chain.
The Sun in the seventh house also creates many difficulties in relationships, and requires an expert handling.
The position of the ruling planet of the seventh house is also very telling:
If that planet is in the first house of self-image, the very idea of being married is extremely important to that person, and he or she would try their hardest to make the marriage work. The only exception here is Uranus. These natives put their independence first. Rarely if ever they make it through the wedding. If this planet is Mars, it would not prevent a marriage, but could create a very angry mate.
If that planet is in the second house, expect this person to be dependent on marriage financially. Once again, Uranus is the exception here: these natives must feel that they are financially independent. Saturn here, as the ruler of the seventh house, would make for a very unhappy spouse, but it does not threaten the marriage per se.
Be sure that you are a good looking fellow or have other exceptional qualities for your sweetheart to boast of, if you are interested in a person whose ruling planet of the seventh house is in the third. If you are an ordinary person, you may marry him or her in your dreams only. Here, once again, Uranus acts as an exception to the rule.
The ruling planet of the seventh house in the fourth shows that the person is family oriented. Neptune here is the most problematic, since the person does not really knows what the family is.
If this planet is Uranus, the native may marry you simply to escape his own family.
You’ve got a true romantic on your hands if the ruling planet is in the fifth house. But be prepared to put children first, once they come.
With the ruling planet in the sixth house, the native is capable of adjustment to the marriage demands, unless we are talking Neptune here – those people have problems adjusting to life in general.
With ruling planet residing in its own seventh house, expect the marriage to loom greatly on the mind of the native. He or she could snatch even a perpetual bachelor / bachelorette. Yet the exaggerated importance of the subject would make for a very difficult relationship, regardless of the nature of the planet, unless we are talking sweet Venus here.
Commitment and marital property are going to be very important to the native with the ruling planet of the seventh house in the eight. If this planet is Neptune, expect to hand everything you own to this native with no strings attached – he or she has no clue what commitment really means, but they would treat your property as their own.
If that planet is the Moon, expect to take care of that person in every way possible. If you are not into mothering your spouses, stay away.
If you come from the same small pond as the person whose ruling planet of the seventh house is in the ninth, and you have no plans of leaving, you are not his or her Prince(ss) Charming
The person whose ruling planet of the seventh house is in the tenth does not marry for richer or for poorer. They are looking for a better societal position from their marriage.
If the seventh house’ planet is in the 11th, the native is looking for love, friendship and respect from his or her spouse. Such difficult planets there as Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Mars and the Moon create stress for the native, but not for his or her spouse.
But if you’d like loving and enduring marriage, be cautious of the native whose ruling planet of the seventh ends up in the 12th house. These people tend to marry their dream rather then the real person, so the marriage often turns into a nightmare for them, regardless of the nature of the planet.
The eighth house is of no less importance to marriage than the seventh, since it signifies commitment, marital property and sex.
Any planet there that comes from the first or second house could be very problematic for the potential spouse.
If the ruling planet comes from the first house (ascendant), the natives is way too oriented towards other people’s values and property. The manipulative tendencies here exceed any Scorpio influences. The least bothersome planets there are the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn.
If the “planet” (a luminary, really) is the Sun, the native is an adept politician, whether it is his / her profession or not. But it may even be a positive factor for the marriage, since the native’s commitment to the spouse and identification with his or her values is paramount.
If the planet in question is Mercury, Venus or Jupiter, it would benefit the native without harming the marriage.
If this planet is Saturn, it is the spouse of the native that is likely to benefit, since the native is very committed, yet does not expect much in return. These natives also tend to be excellent in bed.
The rest of the planets residing in the 8th house spell trouble, particularly so if they rule the ascendant.
The Moon may have, probably, the most negative consequences for the spouse. These natives are emotionally and otherwise dependent to the point of parasitism. Their most important need in life is to be taken care of.
On the positive note, they also tend to be excellent in bed.
Mars in the 8th house is also a sexy planet, no matter where it comes from. But if this Mars is the ruler of the 1st house, the native may carry their natural aggression into sexual matters as well.
The natives tend to be the most aggressive type of go-getters, and the only thing they may refuse to take is “no” for an answer.
Since they tend be violent people, they themselves suffer from violence.
You are not likely to marry a person, whose ruling planet of the ascendant is Uranus and it is located in the 8th house. Such person cannot commit at all.
It does not preclude a long term relationship though – as long as no commitment is offered.
I must say that Jupiter, as the ruler of the ascendant in the 8th house, has similar tendencies. But such natives would marry if they intuit great benefits for themselves or even the person they are involved with (they are genuinely generous souls).
In fact, their natural generosity may create a problem in the marriage, as the natives may easily over-commit themselves to all kinds of people and causes, while treating the marriage commitment lightly.
Neptune as the ruler of the first house in the 8th denotes either a great occultist or a great con artist or both.
Any native with Neptune in the 8th house is a bad material for marriage, but as the ruler of the ascendant it may be particularly evil.
Pluto, as the ruler of the 1st in the 8th, tends to be as difficult for the natives as it is for their partners. The natives tend to obsess about other people’s property and sexual matters to the point of creating extreme difficulties in these matters for themselves and for others.
When a planet in the 8th house comes from the second house, the natives tend to be too envious and jealous, making partnerships of all kinds rather difficult for their partners.
The exceptions to the rule here are Saturn and Uranus. A Saturn person does not expect anything being handed over, while the Uranus person simply does not want anything that is not earned by them.
And regardless of where Neptune or Uranus located in the 8th house come from, an enduring marriage is most unlikely, as commitment is not in these people’s blood.
The rest depends on the basic rules of compatibility and karmic ties.
In fact, it is the karmic ties that have the main say in the marriage. You simply would not be able to marry a person, if this is not required by karma. An astrologer has no say in this at all. The only clue you may have of your karmic ties is either instant irresistible attraction, a sense of great familiarity or instant apprehension.
Sometimes, karma can be seen by an astrologer via a planet of one person conjunct the south node of the other.
In such case, Pluto may mean a pivotal turn in your karmic story, but expect the great challenges ahead. With Neptune, you may be able to dissolve your karma altogether.
Uranus may indicate an unexpected twist in the karmic plot. Saturn would attempt to collect a karmic debt, while Jupiter would pay it instead. Mars would indicate a violent karma, while Venus would satisfy a centuries-long longing. With Mercury, the Sun and the Moon, much of the story can be read through both of your charts.
Good Luck!

I beg to differ from the above analysis. McCain’s Mercury eventhough is exalted in the Rasi chart is debilitated in the Navamsa. Does not bode well for attaining the Presidency. A planetary strenght is ascertained more from the navamsa chart. His Saturn dasa will be coming to an end and usually a dasa at its end does not do good. Also, transit Saturn will be in the 8th to his natal moon (Ashtama Shani) and also transiting over his natal Sun – detrimental and also expect some scandals to break out that would ultimately bring him down.
Obama is currently runing the dasa of Jupiter in Lagna (Jupiter gets neecha banga raja yoga and strong in Navamsa). Also the bukthi is of Moon in its own star – Rohini and exalted in the 5th house and the antara is of the 9th lord Mercury.
Obama will win this election handily.

Thank you, Shiva, for your comment.
I stand by my prediction, although I am rooting for Obama now.
I’m certainly aware that McCain’s Mercury is debilitated in Navamsa.
However, traditional Vedic astrology does not say it makes it weak.
It makes it “evil”. In my experience, Rasi chart shows the actual experience, while Navamsa acts like a “shadow”.
So in my interpretation (confirmed by experience), the exalted planet in Rasi fulfills its promise. But, if the same planet is debilitated in Navamsa, living that planet’s experience can be very painful.
The planets in Rasi show their effects throughout the person’s life, but these experiences become accentuated during their dasas. So far, throughout the long life of McCain, this success bringing Mercury has been placing McCain on top of his career, often almost despite McCain himself. The only reason he lost the nomination in 2000 is because he was running Saturn/ Sun dasa. The Sun in the 12th, being “at war” with Saturn brought the loss, but also the honor. Thanks to that campaign, McCain became household name.
So I am sure that McCain would win (unfortunately). But he will be sorry he did, as the U.S. is heading for the worst time in its history, starting next year, with 2010 being most painful (that’s from the Western astrology view point).
On the other hand, a planet debilitated in Rasi, like Obama’s Jupiter, brings evil outright. I know, as I have the same Jupiter like Obama and Princess Diana, being born in the same year. My Jupiter is also “neecha bhanga” and is strong in Navamsa. All my Jupiter bhukties are painful beyond belief. Princess Di died during her debilitated Jupiter dasa.
Add 6th house relationship with bhukti lord in case of Obama, and you cannot expect anything good. Obama’s turn should come in his Saturn’s dasa (if he so chooses, and there are no stronger candidates).
Also, the beginning, middle and end of a dasa are strictly individual, based on natal chart. For me, most of my dasas’ endings have been good so far. However, my Moon’s dasa will be different… But so good to have a knowledgeable and thoughtful astrologer to come across my piece!
If you have astrology posts, submit them to my Carnival of Astrologers, and I will be happy to publish them.
By the way, I actually hope that I am wrong, and you are right.
I will be voting for Obama.

I realize it requires much more with aspects, ect. (still learning)
But, I am curious with Neptune in the 8th house ["Any native with Neptune in the 8th house is a bad material for marriage"]
Why is that? Is it becuase of foggy, knows no boundaries neptune when it comes to ‘others’ in sex, money? Could leave the person with Nep/8 always dreaming of someone else sexually?
Ella Moss said
Dear D,
Neptune in the 8th house is a bad marriage material is because of all those reasons you have mentioned plus because the natives have no clue of what commitment really is. So even married they are not committed.
Commitment, whether in marriage or business, is a base for creating trust within partnerships.
Without trust, no partnership really exists or is worthwhile.
But you neither could no should ever trust a person with Neptune in the 8th house – they would violate it in a heart-beat, no matter what you are entrusting that person with.
It does not mean that they intend to hurt you. They could be the most sweet and kind. They are simply blind in that respect.

As I understand it, a decade ago there were 9 planets in our solar system. A few years ago an international astronomical society not only demoted Pluto to be a dwarf planet but re-classified 2 other bodies as dwarf planets. Now, they say there are 8 planets in our solar system.
